Over the course of twelve weeks, I was invited to document the FREED Texas program, which aims to reduce recidivism by educating and empowering individuals who have been formerly incarcerated. I immersed myself and participated alongside the scholars, following the lives of three students (Ken Dickson, Camille Campos and Maria Avila). They welcomed me to follow them both inside and outside the classroom to document their stories through photographs, audio recordings, and video. With the help of San Antonio Report reporter Iris Dimmick and Editor in Chief Leigh Munsil, we published the long-form essay on September 17, 2023. The full article can be read here.
